My Love Affair with Shangrila Mactan

I've been declaring that the best resort in Mactan is Shangrila, and yet, I have never written about it. And I'm frustrated that after looking through all my pictures, I don't have much on Shangrila. This recent visit with my family was the only stuff I have. For some reason, when I'm in Shangrila Mactan, I forget about my camera.

Goes to show that when I'm in Shang Mactan, I really get to have a vacation.

There are several reasons why I love Shang Mactan. One is of course the setting. The resort is sprawling with gardens, coconut trees and even a forest. There are outdoor lounges everywhere, facing the gardens, facing the sea.

I also love its beach. Though it is already "enhanced" and manicured, the beach feels very natural. This makes it the best beach in Mactan next to Maribago Blue Water.

The beach get so many beachcombers though, all wanting to spend an entire day on its sands. It is also the best swimming beach in Mactan, as the waters are clear and clean. I suggest you visit the beach during high tide, if you want to swim. The waters can go down to the reef during low tide, making it hard for anyone to swim.

Third, I like how easy and convenient it is to do water sports. In fact, our overnight stay included free use of non-motorized water sports like kayaking.

I also love the food in Shang Mactan. We had a lovely dinner in one of my favorite restaurants in the country, Cowrie Cove. Though expensive, I felt every peso was worth it, because of the spectacular ambience (especially during sunset) and superb dishes.

But most of all, what sets Shang Mactan above the rest of the resorts is its people. Their friendliness, attentiveness and service put them at the very top of the crop. And this is perhaps why I keep coming back to Shang Mactan. Upon checking out, the receptionist smiles genuinely and wishes to see me again.

After having a pleasant lunch in Nagarao, we decided to hire a boat to explore the surrounding islands of Nagarao. There was this one island that the staff recommended, Us-usan Island. As soon as I saw a strip of sand glistening from a distance, I knew we were in for a treat. Us-usan Island. The water wasn't as clear though as in Nagarao and in most of Guimaras. JCO Donuts and Coffee

Its logo looks like Starbucks and the look of the place is like Krispy Kreme in orange. I guess the owners of JCO really thought of merging coffee and donuts, which are of course, perfect for each other. I stumbled upon JCO when it opened in Jakarta 2 years ago. The lines were unbelievably long, and that reminded me of our Gonuts Donuts craze back then. After 2 years, JCO in Jakarta has established itself as a donut shop serving great coffee and blended drinks. They also serve ice cream (gelato). JCO is a franchise that began in Singapore, spread in Malaysia, and hit Indonesia. The donuts craze came about the same time across all countries in Asia. JCO for me is different. When I tasted it the first time, I just had the glazed donut served by my clients. MY initial reaction was, it tasted like Dunkin' Donuts. And that held my interest. Anguib Beach: Cagayan North Series

The waves grew rougher when we left Cape Engano, and the dark clouds started to roll in. Most of us dozed off in the boat, and after what seemed to be 40 minutes, I heard our boatman telling us that we were approaching Anguib Beach. Back in Jotay's, we were told that Anguib Beach was closed, because they were "cleaning" it. So when we  saw people swimming in the wide beach from afar, we were pleased that we didn't listen to that warning. Like most wide white beaches in the Philippines, Anguib Beach was touted as the Boracay of this side of the world. I've been hearing of testimonies of white sand and spectacular sceneries.
