Madera Hong Kong

I guess by now, you know that I am a frequent visitor of Hong Kong, and every time I go, I try to stay in a hotel that I haven't been to. This time, I crossed the waters to stay in Kowloon after learning about this newly opened design hotel called Madera.

I usually don't stay in the Kowlooon side, which I call the dark side of Hong Kong. But Madera made me crossover and it was a good thing I made that decision. Madera is located just off Nathan Road, and is just a 2-minute walk to the Jordan MTR station.

From the moment you enter the lobby, you will be visually drawn to the art installations scattered all over - from the walled garden backdrop of the front desk to the oversized clock found at the bottom of an easel stand to the colorful piggy bank sculpture. It was truly a design hotel, and I was pleased with what I saw.

Check in was a breeze and we were pleased to have been upgraded to a Deluxe Room. Now, I'm not familiar with the other types of accommodations, but if you look through the website, they have quite a variety, and all different in design - all chic and fabulous. I need to book the Loft and Lush Suites next time.

For Hong Kong standards, the room that we got was pretty spacious. And at a surprisingly low rate of P5,500 per night, this was way above my expectations. It was at par with 5-star rooms from big hotel chains The bed was very comfortable and the rest of the furniture added so much posh to the room.

The bathroom was sparkly clean and had a very modern design. The tub was also a jacuzzi, as it had jet spray features. Madera calls itself a boutique hotel, but the rooms definitely make you feel you've booked a 5-star.

But what excited me most about the room was the free mini bar. Yes, you read the sign, all snacks and drinks provided were complimentary. You get 2 cans of soft drinks and beer each, 2 bottles of juice and even 2 bowls of instant noodles.

After settling down, we decided to explore the hotel before heading out into the city. We took the elevator up to the penthouse, where Panorama, a rooftop bar was located.

The bar was very small, but it had nice views of Hong Kong's buildings. We were not able to go up to the rooftop since the wind was strong, but we were able to see it at night when we returned. We then went down to the lobby and noticed an opening to another room. We were shocked to see this unfold in our very eyes.

There was an art gallery in the back of the lobby. At that time, it featured antiques and pieces from old Hong Kong, say around the 1960s. I felt like walking into a scene of In the Mood For Love. The exhibition even had a cadillac and a rickshaw.

We took time taking pictures of the various pieces on display. The exhibit was not as big, but it was just odd to have one in a hotel. I guess they were very serious in living up to their art + design image.

Madera was a great discovery, and since I first booked there, I haven't been back because it was always sold out. I guess the word quickly spread. Madera is now one of the most popular hotels in Hong Kong, and I think their prices have gone up as a result. Well, despite this, I would still like to book their suites and lofts because the pictures on the website are just too tempting. And with this experience, I validate that Madera will continue to make waves in Hong Kong.
