The Charm of Sonya's Garden

For years, we may have made the journey to Tagaytay to savor the organic cooking of Sonya's Garden. Known for serving up delightful buffets of pasta and salad, this Tagaytay institution should be given credit for making this burgeoning city of the South into the food mecca that it is today.

But one thing that people don't often experience is its bed and breakfast. Yes, Sonya's is also a place where you can eat and sleep in. Let me take you into a quick tour of this extraordinary garden.

Sonya's Bed and Breakfast is a complex of several dining halls, tented greenhouses and of course, old fashioned Filipino houses that complete this impressive wonderland of nature. As soon as you enter the path towards the cottages, you can immediately feel the peace and serenity that this place exudes.

There are around 9 rooms or accommodations available, each divided into 4 detached cottages, all named after herbs. One house can be entirely rented out. The rest has separate upper and lower rooms.

There rooms of course are very Filipino in designs, but it reminded me of European bed and breakfasts as well - very quaint and charming. Needless to say, each of them has their own design, so better choose the right one when you get there.

There is no WIFI in the entire place and no TVs as well in the rooms. So forget about worrying about the world when you are here. Some even have no air conditioners. But with the cool climate, this of course won't matter. It is truly an escape from the city.

Miss Sonya herself was kind enough to sign her book that we bought. And we were all shocked when she asked her staff to get her set of inks and stamps. She wrote her dedication using a classic fountain pen and marked the page with her seal. How cool was that?!

Indeed, we left the place recharged and rejuvenated. The art of doing nothing was everything you can do and will want to do in this remarkable oasis in Tagaytay.
